Traveling Circus Corduroy Loop Collar [S]
Traveling Circus Corduroy Loop Collar [S]
Handmade, one of a kind lightweight jacket made from a tobacco felt quilt topper from the early 1900s. Each square was originally hand sewn together. Very fragile, and I have carefully mended it back together in many areas.
Lined with a soft brown corduroy. Finished with 1940s celluloid buttons. Loop collar. Truly a one of a kind art piece that is a testament of the long history of resourcefulness and Americana.
Tobacco felt was used to wrap tobacco leaves during curing. Around 1905, tobacco companies began to include these textile souvenirs in packages of cigarettes and small cigars as promotional collectibles. In the Appalachian region of the United States, these quilts were often made by the wives of tobacco farmers.
